Yoga in the West

Don’t you know the first yoga instruction video was released on 1938? It was not a craze not until the grandmaster of yoga, BKS Iyengar (Guru Ji) took it down to the masses.

Since then, yoga has been recognized around the world as a medication to many body problems. Recently, several studies have proven its efficiency in curing shoulder, neck, and back pains. But those were not the only things yoga offers. Contrary to popular belief, it is not as simple as proper posture and body stretching. The original purpose is spiritually oriented.

In a survey released by National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, yoga is the fifth most commonly used complementary and alternative medicine, or CAM. Yoga is a mental and physical discipline that draws the body to concentration. It is a combination of breathing exercises, proper postures, and meditation. Yoga strengthens the back and legs muscles, increases cardiovascular capacity, and enhances flexibility. Most importantly, it balances the mind and body, which is useful in reducing stress, improving sleeping habits and digestion.

There is a variety of yoga styles available; each suits varying types of body. In the West, yoga styles like Asana, Surya Namaskara, Hatha and Savasana are popular physical regimen divorced of their original purposes. This is because Hinduism is rare in the West. On one hand, the Kundalini is a dynamic practice that is accessible to all. Yogi Bhajan brought the Kundalini style to the West in 1969.

Because doing posture exercises the wrong way might further injure the body, not staying in the pose for too long once you have felt the pain will help you prevent it. However, the best way is to seek guidance from an experienced instructor. When properly done, good stretches in the front of the thighs and hips are achieved.
