Yoga For Expectant Mothers: Lessens Body Pains Caused By Pregnancy

Many experts recommend yoga for pregnant women who suffer from back pain. Yoga is an established alternative medication to body pains such shoulder, neck, and back pain around the world. The Eastern origin of yoga means union of mind and body—a spiritual healing that transcends to body treatment.

In his book Healing Back Pain Naturally, Dr. Art Brownstein’s alternative medication is similar to yoga. His healing program includes the key characteristics of yoga such as stretching, meditative stunts, and breathing exercises.

Dr. Brownstein’s discussion on the relation of mind and body to back pain weaves how stress and strong emotions cause pain into the body.  These unwanted emotions create nerve impulses making the muscles to contract, which in turn causes pain. The set of sequences in a yoga exercise strengthens the back muscles, which were contracted in the process.

It is proven that expectant mothers are healthier in mind and body when they practice yoga. Because their flexibility is improved, they are able to adapt to several demands of the body especially when in labor. The more elastic the ligaments are, the lesser the pain is during labor. In addition, the breathing exercises not only aid relaxation but also give energy both to the mother and her child.

The yoga is composed of different postures. Combined with breathing exercise and meditative techniques, postures are stretching movements that balance the mind and body. Stretching the body increases the blood to several vital areas and stimulates them to function normally. Postures also rejuvenate the brain, spine, glands and internal organs.

Asanas is a popular yoga exercise adapted by the West. The set of sequences in an asana simultaneously stimulates more than one aspect of the body. One of the movements like twist asana affect the spine, adrenal glands, liver, pancreas and kidneys.

With expectant mothers certaion types of asana will help in the delivery of the child. Starting with perhaps a cross legged position then moving on to the Lotus position. From there, sitting with legs wide apart, then moving into a forward stretch which helps to tone the pelvic area and help release any lower back pain issues.

While standing, GENTLE back bends are also good to open up the front spine as carrying a child tends to close down the front spine. In a way just gardening, when you have been at it for a while one tends to stand and go into a back bend to relieve the pressure.

Some who have been doing yoga for some time may be able to go into the Scorpion pose, this is advanced work.
