Back Pain and Knees Part 1

Have you ever thought about your knees and how it affects back pain? What I mean is what they do and their function? We all seem to take our knees for granted that they are just a simple hinge in our leg to give us more mobility.

The kneecap or patella is a shield shaped device and covered in smooth cartilage and floats in the front of the knee joint. It is a wonderful piece of machinery and important that the function of the knee is kept in good order not only for the obvious reasons of mobility but also of its relationship to back pain.

The role of the knee cap or patella is to defray the friction of the quadriceps tendon pulling and releasing as the knee straightens and bends. I will keep this non technical. Any malfunction in the knees and the load will spread elsewhere, causing you to limp a little maybe And throwing your spine off centre and the muscles around the spine working on overload to help correct the imbalance.

So briefly, we need to take care of our knees and the knees will help to take care of our backs reducing back pain.

When you walk you help clear debris that may accumulate in the joint and help with flushing the joint. To help with keeping the knee joints healthy we need to keep a good range of movements in them, this will help to avoid any possible injuries and also avoid surgery for any repair work in the knees. And also help to keep any back pain at bay.

Ok, so what can I do?

There is much you can do, I'll give you a few examples to try to see how you get on, remember the little difference that you do will make a big difference – to your knees and your back!

Remember, go gently and listen to your body, your body tells you the truth!

Ok let's start. First we can do a simple Leg Swing. Sit on a chair or bench where your feet are free from the floor. Put some books or something on the chair to raise your body if necessary.

Now just swing your legs back and forth. That's it! If you would like to go deeper into it, try to straighten your leg when you bring it through, with the heel going away from you and the toes coming towards you.

This action makes the kneecap slide lightly back and forth over the knee hinge, the gentle friction polishing the roughened under surface of the kneecap. Imagine you are sandpapering a splintery board but it is your kneecap getting the work. Do this how often as you can it only takes a few minutes and makes all the difference.
