We have received many questions about the 'best' type of yoga and what can it do for me?
First off what's the best type of yoga? Well that depends, I'm not evading the question, it's a bit like asking how long is a bit of string? All yoga is good. Whatever you do is going to be beneficial. Now to those who feel that yoga didn't work for them, it was too hard .. it was ... May ask you what is your foundation like?
PROVIDING you work with a solid foundation! If you try to build on a non solid foundation your building/structure will collapse. A lot of back pain can be a alleviated with a good foundation.
Let me give you an example. I trust that you are familiar with Triangle Pose? When we start off in yoga we see others do this and that and we want to do the same. And we proceed doing the best we can sometimes at the cost of our foundation.
Ok let's get to it. Triangle, we DO NOT have to complete the pose, we ONLY do so if our foundation is solid.
Ready? Good. Standing with feet wide apart, at this stage (unless you know better) we will go 3-4 feet apart. Your right foot is out to the right at 180 degrees from the body, your left foot to start with is at 45 degrees, it will go towards 90 degrees in time. Your torso is facing forward with shins pulled up, your knees pulled UP not back, with you thighs pulled into your hips.
Now lets get to your foundation. The are four places of foundation in your foot. 1, The ball of your foot, so press these into the floor. The second is by the ball of the little toe with three and four being inner outer spots of the heel of the foot.
Now press ALL of these into the floor EQUALLY. Still with me? Nearly there. While doing this lift your inner arches of the foot AND the outer arches. Not many can lift the outer arches, in time you will be able to get a pencil under the outer arch.
So your pressing all the four points of your foot into the floor and lifting ALL your arches, now draw the legs together, the feet will stay in the same place, doing this you will inter-grate the muscles through out your legs AND into your spine/sacrum.
Then with all this done extend your arms, breathe in and start to go to your right and exhale as you contact your right hand to your thigh, shin, ankle, block, floor etc, taking your left arm to the vertical WITHOUT comprising your base.
This is where most lose the pose, the let go of the base and feel they 'need' to go further into the pose while giving up their base. Stay in this pose as long as you are able and then proceed to the your left side giving the same regard as the right side.
Try it, it WILL enhance your yoga.
Now I want you to do something for me. I want you to tell me what you get from your yoga practice. Tell me two things that you get from it Physically, two things emotionally and two things spiritually. Got you thinking? Good.
Let me know what happpens with your practice AND the 'things' above.
Now if your are coming to one of my classes please bring with you a pen, paper and a felt pen.
Til the next time,
Take care and God Bless
