Stop Shouldering Your Pain

One significant difference of Western medicine with natural and alternative medicine is that it does not recognize the relation of each body part with the whole.  If a person feels pain for a certain part of their body, then the pain is isolated for that body part.  Alternative and traditional medicine recognizes that everything is related.

Yoga started as an Indian spiritual practice more than 5,000 years ago.  Later on, it has become a healing system and exercise performing breathing exercises, retaining physical positions, and even meditation.

Yoga exercises were able to help practitioners deal with different kinds of pain, like muscle pain.  One common muscle pain is shoulder ache.  Yoga exercises help in toning muscles such as muscles in the arms (biceps, triceps and deltoid) and back (rhomboid, levator, trapezius and latissimus dorsi) to build its strength and eventually free of pain. Yoga therapy and exercises could also help in problems like scoliosis, pronated ankles, hunchback (kyphosis), and swayback (lordosis).

There are different positions which can be performed at home which would help develop these muscles.  Examples of yoga positions are plank, side-plank pose and dolphin.  Performing these positions regularly will definitely create a difference.

Aside from this, the four-limbed pose, also called chaturanga dandasana, is one exercise which would fully maximize the shoulder muscles.  The four-limbed pose is just like a push-up.  It would also develop the wrists, arms and abdomen muscles.  There are some yoga styles which would require the chaturanga to be repeated for a few times.  There are some yoga practitioners who would say that upon performing a difficult yoga pose, their pain would go away.

Structural yoga therapy could be used to relieve shoulder pain. In this therapy, the causes of the pain are addressed and not only the symptoms.  Discomfort and pain could be caused by the way the body moves, human development or the stress in a person’s environment.

With different yoga exercises and styles, choosing a particular style to help you deal with your shoulder pain may be a bit confusing.  However, you would be able to determine what would work for your pain by understanding different yoga exercises and its benefits.
