Never Too Late For Yoga

Yoga is not just for younger people, even children and the elderly can practice and perform yoga postures and exercises.  In fact, with a lot of people aging, it is important to have preventive measures against injuries and other sickness.  Yoga, over its more than 5,000 years of existence, has proven that it could improve the balance of body, mind and spirit attaining well-being.

There are studies showing that about 24 elderly women participated in an Iyengar nine-week yoga program. Eventually these participants were able to improve their balance, flexibility, walking speed and muscle strength.  Along with this newfound physical strength, they were also able to improve their confidence.

Aside from physical strength, yoga could also help in reducing stress and make them more relaxed.  Elderly people are often worried with their physicality.  They would often feel stressed, frustrated and even depressed since they are unable to function like they used, too.  Yoga could help them clear their mind, be relaxed and keep focus on what they could do in the future and promote positive outlook and attitude.

There are low-impact exercises which could be practiced by the elderly.  They would usually last for thirty minutes a day.  If you are still not up to a 30-minute routine, there are 10-minute exercises which could be practiced.

It would usually include stretching and breathing exercises.  They are very simple to learn but the effects could be great.  It could increase their energy and at the same time their confidence.

Elderly participants of yoga exercises would often say that they would feel invigorated after practicing or performing yoga exercises, both in the physical and mental being. They would often say that their blood pressure has improved and stabilized.  Even those that have asthma and heart problems would say that they feel better.

Looking at yoga in this perspective makes us realize, that yoga is not only for those who are healthy, young or capable.  They could be practiced and followed by children, adults, elderly, those with sickness and even those who are injured.  Its benefits are immense, it is just a matter of opening yourself to the changes it would bring to your life.
