Back and neck pain are the most common body and muscle pain. Although, it is the most common it does not mean they are the least painful. Back and neck pain could be too harsh, that sometimes, sufferers are unable to perform their daily duties. A common cause of neck and back pain would be lifestyle itself.
Let’s check a driver’s lifestyle. Whether you are driving light and heavy vehicles, drivers would often lean forward to reach the controls easily. This position would strain the neck, since the head is not supported by the headrest. On the long run, it would result into muscle strain.
If you are often driving long distances or drive for a living, then you would have to also consider if your car is suitable or right for you. Consider the position of the steering wheel. You hands should be pointing straight forward. A steering wheel which is not in a balanced position would compromise your back. The driver would have to adjust his back which would displace the spine from its natural position.
Another thing that could cause pain would be lack of headroom. If you are a tall person then compact cars is definitely not for you. Lack of head room and incorrect seat positioning would keep you from straightening your back, forcing you to lower your head forward. If you are a short person, then you would have to sit comfortably without leaning too much, keeping your head far from the support of your headrest.
There are studies showing that majority of the cars in the market are actually not providing the necessary neck support. Which is why it is not surprising that even in rear-end and even mild collision could cause a whiplash injury.
A whiplash injury is caused when the neck and head is thrown forward because of an impact or collision. The neck and the head would move with so much force to the extent that it would go beyond to its normal movement causing pain.
Aside from finding a car suitable for your size, there are also some yoga exercises which could help in dealing with these pains. There are books, audio and video CDs which could offer low back exercises and other simple yoga exercises which could be practice while trapped in a traffic jam. This “drivetime” yoga would energize and relax drivers eliminating pain and even road rage and promoting overall and balanced health.
