You and Back Pain Part 1

Introduction

Yoga is one of the mysteries in life that boggles the mind and is a wonderful methodology for health and well being at the deepest possible level.  Yoga is for everyone, no matter what gender, age, race, size etc.  And is much more than physical exercises.

Yoga is also a powerful system of healing, although that is not its primary aim.  Yoga is not just about the beautiful bodies of diehard yogis and yoginis, although fitness is definitely one of the major payoffs; yoga is a path to that illusive centre we are all seeking.  Yoga is a process, not a goal and is an amazing journey of self-discovery.  Yoga is not a religion as it has no doctrine, dogma or church and is in fact compatible with all religions even though it has its roots in Hinduism.

It is for every body whether lithe and athletic or even paralysed.   Yoga is what happens when you create space in your life and the possibility for change in your mind.  Yoga is also the means to that end. It is not about how flexible you are; it is about stretching your body and spine.  Yoga Definition: The term yoga is
Derived from the Sanskrit word 'yog' which means yoke up or to enter into union with.

Conditions Helped by Yoga: By its very nature, yoga is well suited to address back problems such as those arising from postural alignment conditions.  A small study published in the December 2005 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine found that yoga is more effective than traditional exercise or an educational book for improving function in patients with low back pain.  Yoga teacher John Aplin, involved in arc's yoga and back pain trial, found the ancient therapy helped him recover from a broken back.  A study says yoga is better for back pain than standard therapy.
